This week has some summer crop magic happening. Berries, cherries, grapes, stone fruit and tomatoes are coming in and bringing sunshine and good vibes with them. We saw some quality challenges in this week’s cherry donation. The rain that pummeled Hood River a few weeks ago left its mark on the fruit. We saw an increase in soft and shriveled cherries as a result. Don’t let this stop you from ordering them though. The donor is confident we’ll see improvements in this week’s load. We only have a few weeks before cherry season is over and done for another year. 🍒
Fun fact – Nectarines and peaches are quite sensitive. Even when they feel firm and like they’ll never ripen. Love your stone fruit friends by not squeezing them to see if they are ripe. The very best way to know if they are ripe is to smell them. Ripe or ripening fruit will cast off a sweet rose essence. If you squeeze them repeatedly they will remember and start to bruise where your fingers pressed on them. Be a gem, sniff don’t squeeze!
Another fun fact, nectarines are basically peaches without the fuzzy skin. During the cultivation of the peach, a mutation in one gene caused the trichomes (fuzz) on the skin to disappear. Farmers essentially rebranded these fuzzless peaches nectarines to distinguish them from each other. How fun is that?

Please remember these are expected truckloads coming to the OFB warehouse this week. Reminder: It will take a few days for items to appear in inventory depending on when the loads are received into the warehouse. Food is first received into the Statewide warehouse and then must be transformed/moved to the Metro and West warehouses, including a delivery to West. These are estimates on what you can likely expect to see in the coming days/weeks, not when you will see them.
