Summer is officially here and with it we’re seeing some big changes in our weekly produce offerings. NW storage onions and pears are taking a break. Once our current inventory is gone you won’t see more of either until September. Apples and potatoes continue to be available in volume throughout July-August. Expect to start seeing new crop of both in a few months.
Cherries are coming on strong and we’ve increased our weekly volume from 20 to 35 bins. This is roughly 10,000 more lbs/week than we brought in last summer. Get ‘em while you can. Cherry season is short and the season started one month early this year and should wrap up by the end of July.
You may have noticed an increase in California grown produce the last 4-5 weeks. The NW season isn’t quite online yet so we pivoted to sourcing additional loads from our friends. The freight costs are high and they hurt but we are doing our best to keep the produce flowing in. Expect to start seeing more NW grown crops in the upcoming weeks.
Seasonal reminder – summer heat is unkind to produce. Crops you can store in your warehouse or ambient storage areas in the non-summer months really need to move into your coolers and refrigerators now. If you have limited refrigeration options and your storage spaces are above 65° you are going to want to be cautious about what you bring in. Please remember these are expected truckloads coming to the OFB warehouse this week. Reminder: It will take a few days for items to appear in inventory depending on when the loads are received into the warehouse. Food is first received into the Statewide warehouse and then must be transformed/moved to the Metro and West warehouses, including a delivery to West. These are estimates on what you can likely expect to see in the coming days/weeks, not when you will see them.
